What is an effective rate — and how do you calculate yours?

Your effective rate is the only honest measure of what card processing costs you. It's simple:

Effective rate = total processing fees for the month ÷ total card volume for the month

A quick example

You processed $60,000 in cards last month. Your statement shows $1,890 in total fees and assessments. $1,890 ÷ $60,000 = 3.15%. That's your effective rate — whatever your processor quoted you ("1.9% + 10¢!") is marketing until this number says otherwise.

Why your quoted rate isn't your real rate

What's a good effective rate?

It depends on your industry, average ticket, and card mix (in-person chip/tap is cheaper than keyed or online). Many healthy in-person businesses land roughly between 2.2% and 2.9% all-in; keyed/online volume runs higher. If you're above ~3.2% without a clear reason, an audit is worth your time — that's exactly what our free audit calculates, from your real statement, with the math shown.
